Oiling Your Bike Chain

Do you hear squeaking noises as you ride your old bicycle? Do you find yourself using more force to paddle?  If you are experiencing these things, then you probably need some bike chain oil.

Dirt and grime often build upon bike chains and then eventually the metal tarnish and corrodes. The great thing is that you can avoid this with some bike chain oil.

Always Keep Your Bike Chain Oiled

A smart cyclist knows the importance of oiling their bikes chain. The chain is the part which is dirt prone and easily damaged. That is why you need to keep your bike’s chain cleaned and oiled.

Why Is It Important to Keep Your Bike Chain Oiled?

It is crucial that your bike chain is well oiled always so that it gives you smooth riding experience. Who does not want that? In addition, a well-oiled chain is less likely to break or get damaged. Not only does this save you time, but this will also save you money too. This is a great way to stay rustproof.

When Should You Oil the Bike Chain?

You need to check your bike daily. There is no need to thoroughly clean your bike on a daily basis, but once a month cleaning will keep your bike in good shape.

For daily cleaning, make sure that the chain is clean and oiled. With one hand, lift the rear side of the ground and use the other hand to gradually rotate the nearest pedal. While doing so, check for anything that might be wrong like rust, dirt or tight links.

If you find any flaws, then you can oil your chain without removing it from the bike. Follow the guide step by step:

  1. Brush out the links with a firm brush (an old toothbrush also works)
  2. Re-lubricate the links from time to time with a chain lubricant
  3. Wipe off excess lubricant with a clean, dry rag. Over-lubricating can actually attract new dirt
  4. Monthly, make sure to give your bike a more detailed cleaning and oiling

What Kind of Bike Chain Oil to Use?

When buying any lubricant, make sure that it has the following properties since they ensure the wellness of your bike.

  • The lubricant must reduce the buildup of dirt since dirt accelerates wear and tear
