Mascara can be extremely stubborn to remove when it’s touched your clothing. Most of us can relate to a time where we have ruined a bright shirt just by dropping a little mascara right on the front. How can it be removed though?
Mascara contains carbon or iron oxide pigments as ingredients to darken lashes. Other ingredients include a polymer that forms a thin coating in the lashes, preservatives, thickening wax or oils.
These ingredients make mascara similar to lipsticks but lipstick is more waxy than greasy whereas mascara is greasier.
You can use a multipurpose cleaning detergent on the stain using a cotton ball or a clean cloth. After you notice the stain has gone, you should rinse or launder the shirt properly and as quickly as possible. Make sure that the stain was fully removed in the wash if not during using the cleaner. Only then, put the shirt to drying. Otherwise, you might end up making the stain firm. This could also mean you might have to throw the shirt away.
Another way is to use alcohol. The rest of the technique remains the same. Dip a cotton swab in the alcohol, and dab the stain with it. You should see the stain slowly fade away.
Getting a mascara stain on pillowcases is unlikely, but if you have somehow managed to get a stain on the pillowcase, you should take the case of the pillow right away and follow these steps.
If the stain is fresh, soak it in some running water, then apply a little dishwashing liquid to the stain and massage it. Since mascara contains grease, a good grease-cutting soap or detergent will do the job. If there is still a stain, repeat the process again. Once the stain is gone, you should rinse it with running water.
Alternatively, you can also use the method mentioned above for removing mascara stain from a shirt using a multipurpose detergent.
It gets trickier when it comes to removing mascara stains from a towel because of its texture as compared to that of any other fabric. Its texture makes it harder for you to clean the stain.
Like any other material, you should rinse the towel with cold running water and see if that helps the stain lighten. Run the water from the back of the stain so that it is gets out instead of being absorbed more into the surface. If that removes the stain, well enough, if it does not, you can use the methods mentioned above for shirts or pillowcases using the same materials. Since it is essentially a fabric, those methods should take the stains off the towel too.
You might think of glass cleaner or vinegar as a quick remedy to remove mascara stains from the glasses. While they might work for any other glass or a mirror, using these on your glasses may ruin the protective layer on the lens. Another way is to use dish soap. It surprisingly does more than just dishes. Apply a small amount of dishwashing soap or liquid on the lens and massage it with a clean microfiber cloth. Once the stain has gone, rinse it with warm running water.
Aim to clean your glasses at least once a day or more. If that’s too much, then try once a week to make sure they do not put a strain on your eyes.
Washing the glasses is an easy task, but when it comes to drying the lenses, you need to be very careful not to scratch the lens. In order to do that, make sure you only use a soft microfiber cloth.
Makeup kits and tools are most prone to mascara build-ups because, of course, they have to be more in contact with the mascara such as eyelash curlers. Anyways, you need not worry, as this is not a big problem. All you need to do is to apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and clean the makeup tools with it. Even if there is no build-up, clean up your tools to ensure a better eye and skin health.
Your tiles floors also sometimes get mascara stains if you accidentally dropped it while applying. Even if you took swift action and wiped it off immediately with a tissue, it might as well have smudged rather than getting off. In such situations, you can use a magic formula, WD-40. Even if the stain has dried up, just spray some WD-40 on the stain enough to properly cover it. You will see the stain losing its strength and slowly dissolving in the solution. Now you can use a clean cloth to wipe the stain and WD-40 off. To clean it further, you can spray the area again and wipe it with another cloth to restore the shine.
