How to lubricate tricycles and other wheeled toys

Watching your child learn and grow is one of the most beautiful things one can experience. Even in their early years as they learn to walk, play, and ride around in their little tricycles, we want them to have as few hindrances as possible.
Over time, the wheels of tricycles may collect grease, dust, and rust. This can cause them to work improperly, thereby hindering your child’s playtime and learning. But how do you avoid it? This is where lubricating, maintaining, and cleaning tricycle comes in.

Step 1
Gather your cleaning equipment for cleaning tricycle

Here’s a list of things you’ll need for the task at hand:

  • A bucket of clean water, or a water hose if you have one
  • Liquid soap
  • Sponge
  • Dry cloth
  • An old toothbrush
  • A can of WD-40
  • Gloves and masks if needed

Step 2
Wash up

This step is possibly the easiest, and the most fun if you let your child help you with it. Just rinse the tricycle with clean water, then with soapy water, and scrub the frame with a sponge. After that, wipe the tricycle dry with a clean cloth.

Step 3
Lubricate with WD-40

using wd40 for cleaning tricycle

In addition to lubricating the wheels of the tricycle, WD-40 coats it with a protective layer against corrosion and rust for the future. This step is pretty important for getting the wheels spinning in no time. You may wear a face mask and gloves for this step if the area isn’t very ventilated. Here’s what you do:

  • Take a can of WD-40, and spray a generous amount inside the mechanism of the tricycle for cleaning
  • Give it a minute to set in, scrub the rusty parts with a toothbrush, and wipe it all up with a dry cloth
  • Next, let it air dry for a couple of hours if you’d rather not rinse again, and you’re through!

Like tricycles, other wheeled toys might get a little rusty or have dirt and corrosion build-up. You might not have to use as much soap, water, or lubricant for smaller wheels and toys, but the cleaning and lubricating process remain the same. Regular maintenance of them all will help your child have a smooth playtime, without rust, dirt, or grime getting in the way.
