It is common for taps to get jammed due to extremely cold temperatures, rust or gunk build-up. In most cases, taps get jammed due to our own ignorance and carelessness. People tend to ignore early signs of damage when rust and dirt start building up on their taps, resulting in the issue getting worse over time.
When taps stop functioning normally due to rust build-up, it is extremely difficult to loosen them with bare hands and without external help. However, if you are not able to see any gunk or rust build-up on your taps, you can always use a wrench to get the work done. The wrench allows you to apply an external force on the tap to overcome the friction and restore its functionality. Wrenches are often used when taps have not been touched for a long period of time.
However, if there is a visible build-up of dirt and/or rust on your tap, a wrench may not always work. For this, you will need a WD-40 Multi Use Product. Instead of seeking help from a plumber, all you need are a few sprays of WD-40 to get the work done and have a fully functioning tap at your disposal again.
Here are the major steps involved in loosening a tap with the help of WD-40:
Before anything else, you will need to get yourself a can of WD-40 Multi Use Product from a hardware store or a supermarket near you. It is advisable to have a can handy at home to use in case of emergencies. You can also order WD-40 online from your favourite store.
If there is visible dirt and gunk on your tap, it is always advisable to clean it before using WD-40. Take a wire brush and/or a cleaning rag and remove all the visible dirt from your tap. This should solve a lot of your problems as it is this dirt that prevents your tap from working properly. Once you have cleaned
the tap, try turning it again. If it starts working, you know what the problem was. If it doesn’t, you can move on to the next step.
If your notorious tap is still not working well, you will need to show the magic of WD-40. Take your can of WD-40 Multi Use Product, shake it well, and spray it on and within and crevices of your tap. Make sure you spray the liquid at all the right places, focusing on the areas from where the tap turns. However, do not go overboard with the spraying. WD-40 is a powerful liquid and will get the work done in a couple of good sprays.
Do not start turning the tap immediately after spraying WD-40 on it. Wait for a few minutes while the liquid works its magic. During this time, WD-40 would break the notorious bonds preventing your tap from functioning normally.
Once you have waited for a few minutes, you can try turning the tap by applying some pressure anti-clockwise. You may need to try a little harder if the build-up has been too notorious or the tap hasn’t been used for a long time. After coming in contact with WD-40, you will see how easily the tap will start turning, returning to its normal functionality. If there is still a little resistance, you can always repeat the process once to resolve the issues completely.
Apart from loosening the tap, WD-40 Multi Use Product also helps you get rid of the rust and prevents rust formation in the future. If you need to remove rust from your tap, all you need to do is spray WD-40 on the affected areas, wait for a few minutes, and scrape the rust off using a wire brush.
