Rust can be deadly to some metals. Corrosive materials and oxygen cause metal to rust, which is caused by the chemical breakdown of the metal. On metal exposed to rainwater, salt on the streets, and other materials, rust can sometimes develop.
Rust may start small, but it can grow quickly and damage metals. A short amount of time is all it takes for rust to damage your cycle’s smaller metal components permanently. Nevertheless, if you notice rust early and treat it properly, you can effectively remove it and lessen the risk of it spreading.
Rub affected areas with a steel wool pad or sand paper to remove existing rust. Even if you eliminate rust from part of the metal, it will continue to spread, but it will temporarily prevent further corrosion of the metal.
If the paint has chipped away from the metal, apply touch-up paint or fingernail polish to repair the rust. By painting, you will prevent air exposure and, therefore, rust.
Protect exposed metal, such as gears, chains, and brake cables, by applying WD-40. Surfaces exposed to the air tend to rust more easily, but WD-40 can control oxidation and reduce rust.
It's important to apply WD-40 regularly to the cycle's exposed parts such as the frame and gears. This will help to protect against corrosion and rust caused by moisture, chemicals, and dirt.
It's possible that you will need to replace a part entirely if it's rusted through or if it's significantly damaged or misshapen.
