Imagine being all excited about your trekking trip and encountering a jammed zipper on your rucksack. Nothing is more frustrating than fixing a jammed zipper, whether you are dealing with a jacket, a bag, or a zipped tent. If the concerned article is used a lot and may have come in prolonged contact with moisture, the zipper is likely to get rusted over time, only making it more notorious.
There are many different ways in which people choose to fix a jammed zipper. Here are some household ways commonly used for dealing with the issue:
Fixing A Jammed Rusted Zipper Using Soap Or Wax
People often prefer using a bar of soap or candle wax for dealing with jammed zippers. Some also prefer using crayons but that isn’t the best way to go about it as they may stain your article with colours. Once you have a bar of soap or some candle wax with you, all you need to do is rub the same along the length of the zipper. The wax and the material of the soap would smoothen the zipper out.
However, you may need to repeat the process multiple times before you completely restore the smooth functioning of the zipper. Moreover, using a bar of soap or wax wouldn’t really help you deal with the rust on your zipper.
Fixing A jammed Rusted Zipper With Petroleum Jelly
This is another way of dealing with jammed zippers using household items. Petroleum jelly is often used to smoothen a zipper and make it work effectively. For this, all you need to do is take some petroleum jelly on your hands and apply the same along the length of the zipper.
However, just like using soap or wax, you may have to repeat the process if the zipper doesn’t work normally the first time. Also, this is not the best way to deal with rusted zippers.
Fixing A Jammed Rusted Zipper With WD-40
If you want your zipper to restore its smooth functioning and get rid of the rust on it, you can use the WD-40 Multi Use Product for the same. This would not only help you get the work done in a few minutes but would also protect the zipper from rust in the future.
Here are the steps involved in fixing a jammed rusted zipper using WD-40:
You can grab a can of WD-40 Multi Use Product from a supermarket or a hardware store near you. It is advisable to keep a can handy in the house to tackle household emergencies almost immediately.
Instead of spraying WD-40 directly along the length of the zipper, it is advisable to spray it on a clean cotton cloth first. This would prevent the object with the zipper from getting in touch with the liquid. Especially if you are dealing with objects where the zipper portion is really small, you should always use a cotton cloth instead of a direct spray.
Immediately after spraying the WD-40 Multi Use Product on the cloth, rub the same along the length of the zipper to apply the liquid. Make sure that the zipper is closed to make it more convenient and efficient for you.
Do not start opening the zipper right after applying the liquid to it. Let the object rest for a few minutes as WD-40 works its magic on the zipper and the rust on it. During this time, the liquid would loosen the rust particles to make them come off easily.
Finally, you can wipe the rusty areas of your zipper using a cotton rag and see how easily the rust comes off. Also, by this time, the zipper should have restored its functionality and you can check the same by opening it slowly.
