Metals have an important place in our daily lives. Whether it is a matter of driving your car or playing with your toys, metals encapsulate our world. Choosing the Right Metal

Aluminium

Stainless Steel

Weathering Steel

Weathering Steel is cheaper than stainless steel but does not offer the same surety of resistance to corrosion, as some stainless steels do.

However, if you’ve purchased a beautiful metallic showpiece that runs against all of the above-mentioned recommendations, give it a layer of WD-40 for protection, immediately. Trust me, you cannot afford a delay when it comes to corrosion, for time has a way of making things rusty.

The World of Coatings

There are many different kinds of coatings that can be done for the sake of protecting your metals. They include:

  • Coating a layer of corrosion-resistant metal over the surface of the item, which requires protection, can save it from corrosion. It will serve as a barrier against the environment.
  • A solution of sodium hydroxide, potassium nitrate and water can be used to immerse small steel items for protection against corrosion. The remedy, however, is only for a short period of time and gives the object a blue-black coloured appearance. Consequently, this process is known as bluing and you might not wish to use it if you are an aesthete.
  • Oil-based coatings can also be given to metals that require protection. They are cost-effective and are ideal for stopping the penetration of oxygen and water.
