We get it. You didn’t mean to spill your coffee, or wine, or the ketchup (or perhaps, even gum?) But it happened, and now your precious carpet is stained. How do you get out of this sticky situation? What do you do?
Of course, the best thing to do is to avoid the stains in the first place. But knowing how to clean up stain accidents is fairly important, too. Which is why we’ve come up with two stain-cleaning solutions that don’t need a fancy machine, to help you through.
The classic home remedy
If you’d rather stick to using things readily available around the house, this solution is for you. To an extent, it works well with lighter, less stubborn carpet stains. Just make sure you have enough time, the right supplies, and the willingness to follow through all the steps carefully!
Here’s what you will need:
- Two empty spray bottles
- Dishwashing liquid
- 1 cup of cold water, 1 cup of warm water
- A clean cloth
- Paper towels
- Baking soda
- An old toothbrush
Mix the dishwashing liquid with warm water, and spray it onto a clean cloth. Dab this cloth on the stain slowly, allowing the carpet to become a little damp with the soapy solution.
Scrub the spot with a toothbrush carefully, without damaging the carpet.
Firmly dab the damp spot with a dry cloth, then the soapy cloth, and then the dry cloth again. Repeat this process until the stain seems to fade a little.
Spray the cold water onto another clean cloth, and dab it over the same spot on the carpet. Follow this up by dabbing the carpet with a dry cloth. This will rinse out the dishwashing liquid on the carpet without damaging it.
Pile a small stack of paper towels in the exact spot that you just cleaned up. Place a heavy paperweight on top of it, and let it sit overnight. This will help the towels to absorb any residual stain or moisture.
Sprinkle a small amount of baking powder onto the carpet, gently brush it in, and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Dust the carpet right after.
Using WD-40 to remove carpet stains
Often, even the most powerful of vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, or home remedies aren’t able to get rid of the most stubborn stains. This is when WD-40 comes in handy. Its activated formula equips you to remove carpet stains within a few minutes!
Here’s what you will need:
- A can of WD-40
- A sponge
- A dry rag/ towel
Spray WD-40 directly onto the stain, and wait for the solution to get absorbed. This should take around 20-30 seconds.
Use a damp sponge to rub it in thoroughly. As you do so for a minute, the solution will work its way under the stain and loosen its bonds, making it easier to wipe off.
Take a dry rag or towel, clean up the damp spot on the carpet thoroughly, and you’re good to go!
Although home remedies do a great job on lighter stains, they’re time-consuming and involve many supplies. WD-40 seems like a much more convenient, effective, and quicker way. It truly lives up to its reputation of being a miracle cleaner, even when it comes to stubborn carpet stains like makeup or even candle wax.
